Last weekend my mom and I traveled to Reading, Pennsylvania, where she grew up, for my cousin’s bridal shower. We arrived on a beautiful Friday evening and decided to grab dinner outside at Mazi, a Greek restaurant. We made a reservation, as the restaurant tends to get busy.

We arrived in time for our reservation and were able to take advantage of the last 30 minutes of happy hour specials. I enjoyed a glass of house Sauvignon Blanc, and we decided to split a trio of spreads, which included tzatziki, hummus and Kalamata olive dip. The spreads came with pita and cucumbers. Our waiter also brought olive bread with olive oil for the table. Each was flavorful, though my favorite was the tzatziki. With so many delicious entrées to choose from, my mom and I decided to order the Mediterranean chicken and scallops and split the two.

Our table outside was cozy, and we enjoyed people-watching as we dined. When our entrées arrived, I started with the chicken, accompanied with feta orzo and spinach atop a fig compote. The chicken was well-seasoned, and the fig compote was the perfect tart accompaniment to the rest of the dish’s components. When we finished our halves, we switched and I finished the scallops. The dish included a creamy risotto, olives and capers. Both entrées were delectable, though I will give the slight edge to the scallops, which were perfectly cooked and had the better pairing with the risotto.

Mazi did not disappoint, and I look forward to dining there again on a future Reading visit.
