Culture and Cuisine in Montevideo, Uruguay

Spend time exploring the port city of Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital. The city offers cultural activities, plenty of traditional restaurants, beaches, parks and historic landmarks for your four-day trip.

Day 1 Arrive in Montevideo and enjoy dinner out

Day 1

Located about a half-mile from city center, Sheraton Montevideo Hotel is a great property to call home during your trip. Spend some time outside after your flight and visit Parque Rodó. The area boasts green space, a lake and amusement park rides. Have an indulgent Uruguayan meal at FOC on your first night. The fine-dining restaurant offers a five-course dinner menu, perfect for sampling local cuisine prepared using inventive techniques.

Day 2

Start your day with a relaxing morning at Pocitos, an upscale beach neighborhood. Here you’ll also find various restaurants perfect for a quick bite or a sit-down meal. Next, head to Montevideo’s old town, Cuidad Vieja, to take in the city’s architecture. Head to Bodega Bouza, a family-run winery located north of the city center. There is an on-site restaurant at Bodega Bouza. Daily wine tours are available Monday–Saturday.

Day 3

Spend the day visiting some of Montevideo’s cultural and historical sites. Make your way to the historic Mercado del Puerto. Opened in 1868, the converted market now boasts numerous restaurants and other dining options serving Uruguayan dishes. Next do some more sightseeing at nearby Plaza Independencia. There are multiple museums located around the city square, including Museo Andes 1972, Museo Gurvich and Museo Histórico Cabildo de Montevideo. Later, take in a performance at Teatro Solís. The historic theater opened in 1856.

Day 4

You can’t leave Montevideo without sampling some grilled meats. The city’s cuisine is influenced by parilla, the grill. Try La Pulpería, a local favorite where the focus is grilling prime cuts of meat to perfection. Make your way to Carrasco International Airport, the largest in Uruguay, to depart.
