One of the resorts dealing with fallout following recent tourist deaths in the Dominican Republic is being forced to temporarily close its doors after massive cancellations.

In early June, several tourists mysteriously died. Authorities believe compromised alcohol had something to do with the deaths. In another instance, a woman claimed she was beaten and left for hours before being discovered by hotel staff. Now, the hotel where the alleged attack took place is closing its doors through November.

According to NBC News, Majestic Elegance Punta Cana closed late last week. It is expected to re-open Nov. 7.

A local English-language newspaper, Dominican Today, reported hotel officials said the closure is due to sweeping cancellations and low occupancy. The report goes on to say the hotel had some of the worst occupancy numbers in the nation’s eastern region. The operators own two other properties, Majestic Colonial Punta Cana and Majestic Mirage Punta Cana. Those properties remain open.

A hotel spokesperson told NBC News the closure was not due to low occupancy numbers, but instead so the property can focus on guestroom and swimming pool renovations.

Between June and July, flight bookings to the country from the United States dipped 84 percent compared to the same period from 2018. Before the deaths, a report from travel intelligence firm Forward Keys said bookings were up nearly 3 percent.
