A new report from the Pacific Asia Travel Association projects more than 1 billion international visitors could come to the region in the near future.

From 2014 to 2019, the region experienced an average annual growth rate of 5.3 per cent. From 2019 to 2024, that average is expected to rise to 6.3 per cent. The average growth rate refers to the number of international visitors coming to the region each year. The growth means more than 256 million additional international visitors will visit the region annually before 2024.

Visitor distribution in Asia Pacific is expected to stay largely the same. Small changes are projected, but all parts of the region can expect growth, the report said.

In addition to  increasing annual visitors, Asia will remain the biggest destination region in the world. The region is expected to maintain a relative share of visitors of more than 77 per cent. Many of these visitors originate in Asia and travel internationally within the region. International, in-region travelers will account for 68 per cent of all visitors in 2024.

As far as the growth of tourism in individual countries, China, Japan and Macao expect to receive more than 10 million additional international visitors annually by 2024.
