An uptick in searches for Puerto Rico travel proves travelers aren’t only curious about the capital of San Juan, but are interested in exploring all this Caribbean island has to offer. Located on the quieter southeast coast, Wyndham Palmas Beach & Golf Boutique Resort is well-situated for visitors seeking a convenient home base to explore the region’s culture, nature and beaches.
Depending on your perspective, the overall location can feel unplugged and serene … or sleepy. The property is situated within the sprawling gated community of Palmas del Mar, which boasts two championship golf courses, a large tennis complex, marina, equestrian trail and biking trails. There’s also direct access to a pretty, palm-lined beach via a paved path, with loungers and umbrellas. While it’s certainly pretty and never crowded, it’s more suited for walking or sunbathing than swimming due to strong currents and riptides and sargassum.

More appealing is Wyndham’s duo of poolscapes. A zero-entry family pool designed with a small lazy river is social and vibey, while the laid-back, adults-only infinity pool overlooks the golf course and features cabanas, more shade and a swim-up bar.
The 107 rooms and suites are categorized into three “collections” that basically come down to location: quieter, garden-facing rooms (Playa); those conveniently located closer to the pool (Costa); or ones with balconies and slightly better resort views (Lagos). Touches include pillowtop beds and premium bedding; 50-inch, flat-screen televisions; mini-fridges; and a dedicated workspace. Some rooms include a shower–tub combo; though, oddly, the tubs aren’t actually usable for soaking.

Some accommodations recently underwent renovations, adding tropical details including natural woven rugs, warm textured walls, tropical hardwoods, local artwork, and a palette of turquoise and sand. However, those that haven’t yet had a glow-up are woefully dated, with harsh lighting, stark walls; and an unfinished, “basement apartment” feel since some are located down a short dark stairwell. It pays to confirm what you’re actually going to get when you book.
Dining here is anchored by Trova Coastal Kitchen, a chef-driven restaurant serving modern Puerto Rican cuisine and a design ethos that comes closest to delivering the airy, boho-chic aesthetic the resort strives for. It’s done up in macrame and wooden beaded pendant lights, bamboo and rattan dining furniture, and a wood-slatted ceiling, all imagined in white and neutral tones. Seating spills out onto a patio overlooking the main pool. Chef Daniel Lugo, a native of Mayagüez, views his menu as a “love letter to Puerto Rico,” with nostalgic ingredients and contemporary execution. Guests can experience a four- or five-course tasting menu, with or without wine pairings, or order à la carte. Standouts include suckling pig steamed buns with hoisin and salsa criolla, local grouper in coconut broth with bok choy, and braised short ribs in banana leaves.

Botica Bar is both a sleek watering hole and tapas restaurant, with Mediterranean-focused small plates including croquetas de manchego, jamon serrano and a signature smash burger topped with secret sauce and aji chimichurri. It’s also a fun spot to order cocktails made with Puerto Rican rum, like the Guayabera Guayaba, which shakes aged Bacardi with guava, lime and bitters. There’s a bar and grill at the main pool, with an all-day menu of salads and handhelds. Best of the bunch is the selection of wood-fired pizzas which top traditional or cauliflower crust with anything from spicy prosciutto and honey to yellow squash, mint, ricotta and pesto.
The property’s relatively isolated location means that, depending on the length of your stay, you’ll cycle through dining options quickly. Ditto for the resort amenities. Without a spa or swimmable beach, and limited activities, you’ll want to venture out, which means you’ll need a car. Luckily, an on-site rental desk makes that easy. The fishing village of Punta Santiago is a 15-minute drive away, with casual seafood shacks and views of Monkey Island. Exploring the waterfalls, hiking trails and lush jungle scenery of El Yunque requires just a 40-minute drive north to the East End, where you’ll also find sister property Wyndham Grand Rio Mar. Guests to either resort have reciprocity with the amenities of the other, including use of the pool, beach and restaurants. (The East End is also a smart jumping-off point for daytrips to Culebra or Vieques.) Arriving at the capital will take about an hour without traffic.

But you don’t always have to go far to immerse yourself in an authentic sense of place. Just a short stroll away, Pterocarpus Forest Nature Reserve, a rare, freshwater swamp ecosystem, offers a quieter kind of immersion. It’s a quick, atmospheric walk and a reminder that some of the most distinctive experiences in this coastal slice of Puerto Rico are also the most low-key.
