Austria’s capital city has no shortage of stately historic hotels to choose from, but if your tastes run to something a little less traditional, consider a luxury themed apartment from Chez Cliché. Five properties at locations Vienna’s first and ninth districts have décor based on fictional characters, including an ex-jockey’s equestrian-themed digs, and a flight attendant’s travel souvenir-bedecked abode.

This is Not a Hotel, located near the Danube Canal, is a former commercial property that’s been transformed into three separate suites. Stays include breakfasts that feature local and regional ingredients. Other commercial spaces and unused shops in the fourth district near the new train station have been likewise renovated into guest rooms by Urbanauts, a group of Viennese architects. The hip street lofts are each named to reflect their past incarnations — including Der Glererist (The Gallery Owner), Der Künstler (The Artist) and Die Schneiderin (The Seamstress).
