After a three-year project funded by the European Union, the UN World Tourism Organization releases the nearly-Zero Energy Hotels e-toolkit. The online toolkit helps hotels assess their energy usage through a questionnaire and increase their sustainability efforts by identifying energy efficiency opportunities. If followed, the toolkit can help hotels comply with the nearly-Zero Energy Buildings regulations, enforced in all European Union states starting 2020. The regulations require buildings to demonstrate high levels of energy performance, generating low amounts of energy to a significant extent through renewable energy sources on site or nearby. “This unprecedented initiative shows not only the concerns, but also the high level of commitment, of the tourism sector in addressing one of the worldwide preoccupations: climate change,” said Taleb Rifai, secretary-general, UNWTO. As part of a pilot program, 16 hotels in Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, Romania, Spain and Sweden became neZEH hotels, to help others in Europe best implement energy practices.
