With World Ocean Day just a month away, travelers look for sustainable destinations that focus on conservation and marine life interactions. Enter The Islands of Tahiti. Located in the South Pacific, far from packed coastlines and industrial shipping lanes, Tahiti is committed to ocean protection and redefining what conservation looks like.
Tainui Atea, the world’s largest marine protected area, is leading this effort with its protection of about 5 million square kilometers of ocean across the Exclusive Economic Zone. The destination hopes to spread the word the ocean should not only be treated as a natural treasure, but also as a living foundation for culture, identity and responsible tourism.
“Our ocean is our identity,” said Vaihere Lissant, CEO, Tahiti Tourisme. “It shapes our culture, our communities, and the way we welcome the world. By protecting this heritage, we not only enrich travelers’ experiences but also ensure lasting benefits for our islands and future generations.”
Tainui Atea is home to some of the Pacific’s most remote and ecologically intact marine environments, including the Gambier Islands, where clear lagoons, colorful reefs and migratory species have thrived untouched by mass development. The area has strict conservation rules, such as bans on seabed exploitation and drifting fish aggregating devices, to help ensure the waters remain pristine for years to come.
This protected area is guided by Indigenous Polynesian knowledge and includes the traditional practice of rāhui, an ancestral practice which puts temporary bans on the harvesting or fishing of marine and terrestrial species. The local communities also play an important role in managing the ocean by agreeing to a long-term management plan that highlights accountability, adaptability and shared responsibility.
The initiative has been so successful, it has spread to a variety of local marine protected areas across the destination’s 118 islands. Spanning five distinct archipelagos, each region has the chance to tailor its specific ecological and cultural characters. For example, the Gambier Islands pair conservation with ecotourism and cultural exchange to offer a model where protection enhances community life and visitor experience. Travelers can experience the commitment by exploring healthier reefs, exciting marine life and preserved lagoons. In return the local communities can protect the natural heritage while supporting tourism centered around respect, balance and long-term resilience.
