Taste Toronto’s Diversity with a Globally Focused Food Tour

Toronto offers a taste of the world. With more than half of its population born outside of Canada, the sprawling metropolis is considered one of the globe’s most diverse cities. You’ll hear that in the variety of languages resonating in your ears as you walk down the streets and in the impressive assortment of global cuisines — representing more than 230 ethnic origins — available from downtown to the city’s farthest reaches.

Yes, there’s Chinatown and Little Italy and Little India. But gastronomy-minded visitors will also be eager to take field trips to Koreatown, Little Jamaica, Little Tibet and Greektown, to name just a few of the many neighborhoods where immigrants settled and. kept cooking the foods of their ancestors.

You’d find it nearly impossible to taste your way through all of these cuisines in one — or even two — trips. The best plan is to join a small-group food tour. Jusep Sim’s Chopsticks & Forks operates one of the highest-rated options in the city: the Kensington Market International Food Tour.

Kensington Market, a national historic site, is one of the last ungentrified downtown neighborhoods and has long been an immigrant enclave. During one of the six-days-a-week walks, guests take a culinary journey to eight countries on five continents — including Jamaica, Tibet and Chile — all encompassed in less than one mile of walking.

“The food that we eat [on the tour], most of it is made by people from the country of origin that it represents,” Sim said.

Beyond the global menu, the Kensington Market tour emphasizes the history and culture that make the food — and Toronto — what it is. Similarly, Culinary Adventure Co. takes hungry patrons around St. Lawrence Market, a landmark site now fueled by more than 100 specialty food vendors, artisans and farmers, while Delicious Discoveries focuses on walking culinary tours of local neighborhoods outside of tourist hot spots.

“It’s about understanding the cultural landscape of the city,” said Ashley Rochefort, media relations manager, United States and Canada Leisure, Destination Toronto. “If you’re not familiar with Toronto and its diversity, [a food tour] is a great way to get a little taste, literally, of all of that in a couple hours.”
