Tampa International Airport is installing a 21-foot pink flamingo sculpture in its Main Terminal to celebrate “one of Florida’s most well-known birds.”

The sculpture, called “HOME,” was designed by artist Matthew Mazzotta. It’s a “floor-to-ceiling sculpture that depicts a hand-sculpted resin and fiberglass flamingo as it gently dips its head beneath the surface of the water.”

The airport said, “The immersive installation, located prominently near the Shoppes at Bayshore, transports viewers underwater, inviting them to walk up and share a simple moment in the life of one of Florida’s most well-known birds.”

“I think we will find that HOME is aptly named as it will evoke a sense of place for those that experience the artwork,” said Robin Nigh, a member of the City of Tampa’s Manager of Arts and Cultural Affairs, and a member of TPA’s Public Art Committee. “The artwork should provide a visual respite; a sense of home for returning travelers and a sense of arrival for visitors. It is unique, quiet, beautiful, kitsch and fun all at once. HOME will carry the meaning of what individuals bring to it, very much like one’s ‘real’ home.”

The flamingo is one of seven new art pieces approved by the airport out of 734 submissions. Other artwork includes a mixed media mural entitled “Cloud Ascent,” designed by London-based artist Jason Bruges, and a mural featuring a composition of local flora and fauna by New York artist Jason Middlebrook.

Look for Unique Museums Filled with Fascinating Artifacts Wherever you Travel

Museums beckon wherever we go. They amuse and enlighten travelers and bring to public attention historical, artistic, scientific and natural wonders. Most are thought-provoking and educational, stretching our minds and our knowledge of the world. Some, however, stand out as just plain quirky: personal and sometimes whimsical collections, museums dedicated to a unique skill or long- forgotten industry, arcane collections originally designed for scientific study. Others devote their space to sharing a subject that represents one person’s consuming passion.

Savoy Palace Hotel Review

Savoy Signature Hotel Group continues to generate a buzz in international hospitality about the way its diverse portfolio shapes Madeira’s future as a destination; the brand keeps existing fans (particularly the traditional group of older British and German visitors) interested while drawing younger, more active travelers beyond the confines of Europe. The Savoy Palace, opened in 2019, took on the “legacy” mantle of a predecessor (the former Savoy Hotel) that stood on the same site, and then reopened with a lot of enthusiasm after the height of the pandemic passed.

Travel-Themed Movies and TV Series Take us on Journeys Real or Imagined

The Namib Desert, 1992. After hours of driving across parched African emptiness, we reached an oasis of trees and shade surrounded by giant red dunes. Two dozen trucks arrived there before us, along with RVs, tents and tables. Power lines webbed the whole makeshift encampment. Generators and air-conditioners hummed. People bustled around. Attention seemed to focus on a particular tree in the middle distance. I aimed my binoculars and saw more people, a line of empty directors’ chairs, a movie camera, reflectors, a sound boom ... and Reese Witherspoon.

Why the Future of Business Travel Might Look Different

Global business travel is making its way back, even as the pandemic and other world events continue to challenge its return. In a recent poll from the Global Business Travel Association, more than four in five respondents (86 percent) from across the industry said they feel more optimistic than they did at the beginning of the year. Business travel bookings, the need to travel to do business and employee willingness to travel are all on the rise.
