Spend Your KLM Layover With A Local In Amsterdam

If you find yourself in Amsterdam with a long layover on a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines-operated  flight and want the chance to explore the city, you are in luck, as the airline offers a new experience that connects travelers with Amsterdam locals.

The Layover With A Local program enables travelers waiting for their connecting flights at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to meet up with a local in the city center for a more authentic Amsterdam experience.

The service is available for travelers with a layover of six or more hours. Based on flight information, select travelers can sign up for the Layover With A Local app that matches passengers with locals based on languages and social interests.

Upon landing, a passenger is provided with instructions and a free train ticket from Dutch Railways to Amsterdam’s city center via the app. Participants can enjoy a free drink together or choose a different activity to enjoy. After the meet up, the app assists with getting travelers back to the airport on time.

“This initiative fits KLM’s positioning as a social airline. Around 70 percent of KLM’s passengers catch connecting flights at Schiphol, which is why we created this service that turns layover time at the airport into a unique and social experience in Amsterdam with a new friend,” said Tjalling Smit, senior vice president of digital, Air France-KLM. “Travelers who catch a brief glimpse of Amsterdam this way may decide to come back in future to get the full Amsterdam experience.”

The app is slated to launch this month March and is initially available for passengers departing from the United States, Canada and Italy.
