ARRIVAL/CHECK-IN: The newest brand of Lotte Hotels brings a touch of casual luxury to the business traveler, alongside a sustainable commitment. This brand resonates well with foreign travelers to Gangnam, the business hub where you’ll also find much to enjoy in the surrounding neighborhood when you have some free time.
The property set itself up for success with six self-check-in monitors in the lobby on the ninth floor. There was a big group checking in when I arrived, so I easily avoided the wait by using the self-check-in service; make sure you have your reservation number on hand for this.
GUEST QUARTERS: Spacious with great views of the surrounding area, my room offered a bird’s-eye view of the famous Royal Tombs. The room featured a comfy chair for lounging with a small table to work from — I sat here to enjoy the view of the park. The bathroom included all the essentials from Malin+Goetz. Bedside controls made it quite easy to change the room ambience, with light fixtures grouped by areas of the room so you can have full light or dimmed lighting when turning them off for the night.
SERVICES/AMENITIES: If you’re limited on time, you can dine at the on-site restaurant, Floating, and host clients at Floating Bar. To stay nimble, head to the decent-sized fitness center with exercise equipment from Technogym. There’s also an on-site laundry room, and the unmanned store MAXI BAR offers real snacks (not the run-of-the-mill candy vending machine).
TOP TAKEAWAYS:
- Explore the neighborhood on foot; it’s easy to navigate and experience local flavors. I found a little tteokbokki place with a couple of set menu options I thoroughly enjoyed.
- Download the Naver app to discover and navigate more of the area; directions are in English and super easy to follow. South Korea has one of the best systems in the world — fantastic connectivity for sure!
- Visit the Royal Tombs; the last Wednesday of the month, entry is free. This peaceful space replete with trees makes you forget you’re in the middle of the city.

Apr 13, 2026I Took a Trip Without Knowing the Destination … Here’s What I Learned
When it comes to travel planning, I’m a control freak. I book flights based on aircraft type and seat availability, overanalyze hotel reviews, know exactly what I’m going to eat or drink before ever setting foot in a restaurant, and capture every last detail in a lengthy Google document. So, when I recently had the opportunity to take a surprise trip — with nary a decision made by me — I was a little skeptical. The thought of relinquishing my travel fate to someone else gives me the shakes. However, a tiny part of me was curious about what would happen if I let go, so Type A personality be damned, I decided to face my inner planner head-on and head out on an unknown solo getaway.
