ARRIVAL/ CHECK-IN: After a traffic-filled commute from Philadelphia, I was eager to check in to my room at The Liberty, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Boston. Friendly staff greeted us as we arrived and quickly helped unload our luggage and valet our car off the property.
The lobby was nothing short of lively. Being Friday night, it was no surprise both restaurants were at capacity. (I was practically drooling over the menus on the drive in.) Luckily, the fully stocked bar adjacent to the check-in desk was fueling guests who were awaiting a table. We enjoyed a complimentary glass of Champagne as we rode the elevator up to our room (and oohed and aahed over our warm welcome).
GUEST QUARTERS: With 298 rooms (and suites), each guestroom has been renovated to play off the hotel’s former standing as Boston’s own Charles Street Jail. The dark wood-stained furniture paired well with the plush, soft headboard adorning the back wall, offering a warm and inviting vibe to our Superior Room. My queen-sized bed aligned well with the floor-to-ceiling views of the city skyline overlooking the Charles River.
As an avid take-my-time “get ready-er,” I appreciated the two large mirrors located on separate sides of the bathroom as well as the stand-alone shower opposite the bathtub. It really is the simple things that matter.
SERVICES/AMENITIES: While the valet parking provided a nice touch, The Liberty took it a step further. Whenever we needed our car, we requested it via a link texted to my phone. Within 10 minutes or less, I received a text saying our car was ready. Had the weather been warmer, we would’ve taken full advantage of the daily bike and kayak rentals, included in our nightly Destination Fee.
Whether it was a weekend or not, the lobby seemed to be full of life around the clock. Guests have the opportunity to participate in various social events hosted at the hotel such as complimentary yoga classes, magic and fashion shows, DJ sets, and historical tours of the property. In fact, locals from Beacon Hill Bakery deliver fresh-baked pastries each weekend for guests to purchase in the lobby.
TOP TAKEAWAYS:
- Formerly the Charles Street Jail (housing famous inmates such as Malcolm X), the building’s 2007 renovations preserved historical pieces, including the central atrium, trademark circular windows, interior catwalks, iconic jail cells and the gray granite exterior. This adds to the charm and character of the hotel.
- When renovating the hotel, the construction team invited Buddhist monks to cleanse any negative/bad spirits lingering on the property from former years.
