Who knew? Turns out that a lot of the marble taken for granted as Italian was actually quarried in Portugal. Learn how and why as you follow the Shades of Marble Route through villages in the Alentejo Region, where some of the world’s most beautiful and colorful marble can be found. Take hard-hat tours of subterranean mining tunnels and working quarries, visit factories where the marble is cut and finished, and explore the studios of local sculptors who transform the marble into art and functional goods.
Routes range from half-days with a quarry visit, a tour of area marble monuments, and an optional regional lunch; full-day tour with two quarries, a processing pant, tour of the area’s marble heritage, lunch and shopping; and two-day programs that include all of the above, along with dinner and culturally-themed entertainment. All programs can be individually tailored.
