Boasting one of the most comprehensive collections of farm tractors, farm machinery, historic trucks and vintage cars anywhere, the privately owned Pioneer Village in Minden, Neb. provides a fascinating glimpse into early America. With 28 separate buildings spread over a 20-acre site, the museum’s collection includes more than 50,000 objects. Among the buildings are an original Pony Express station, an early log cabin, and a replica general store once known as a “soddy.”
Exhibitions include Western landscapes by artist William Henry Jackson, Currier & Ives lithographs, a steam-powered carousel and an extensive collection of antique toys. Among the historic vehicles on display are an ox cart, a stagecoach, a horse-drawn street car, electric trolley, bicycles, aircraft, buggies and automobiles. In Kearney — the location of historic Fort Kearney — transportation enthusiasts peruse a collection of 200 restored vintage cars at Classic Car Collection, many of them examples of automobiles that once traversed America’s illustrious Lincoln Highway.

At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.

I am looking out at Vietnam’s largest city from the country’s tallest building. Sitting in a comfortable chair facing the floor-to-ceiling window, I have taken in the view in daylight and darkness at dusk and dawn. It’s ever-changing and always hypnotic.
