Orlando International Airport is considering replacing federal Transportation Security Administration employees with screeners from a private security company.
A little-known rule allows airports to subcontract security roles to private companies. Around 22 out of 450 U.S. airports have done so.
There are 15 private companies competing for these contracts under the “screening-partnership program.” Airports are not allowed to spend more than the cost of TSA operations if they go the private route.
Orlando is the busiest airport in Florida and the 13th-largest in the United States, with 44.6 million passengers a year. The airport struggled to keep pace with passenger volume and TSA checkpoints are often bottlenecks.
Meanwhile, TSA says the problems can be solved by adding more security lanes.
