At the recent MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries ceremony in Copenhagen, Kvitnes Gård in Vesterålen was awarded one Michelin star, marking a historic first for Northern Norway and indicative of a broader shift taking place across the Arctic region as chefs, producers and local communities redefine fine dining in the far north.
For years, visitors to the region known for its dramatic landscapes, northern lights and outdoor experiences have discovered its food culture, as well. Arctic ingredients, extreme seasonal variations, cold-water seafood, traditional preservation techniques and a new generation of chefs create a culinary identity unlike anywhere else in Europe.
“We would like to warmly congratulate Halvar Ellingsen and the entire team at Kvitnes Gård on this remarkable achievement. Earning a Michelin star is one of the highest recognitions in global gastronomy and is first and foremost a testament to their talent, vision and commitment. We are incredibly proud to see a restaurant from Northern Norway receive this distinction,” said Trond Øverås, CEO, Arctic Norway Tourist Board. “This recognition also shines a light on the producers, ingredients and food traditions that define Northern Norway. The success of Kvitnes Gård demonstrates what is possible when local knowledge, local ingredients and culinary excellence come together.”
The Michelin award comes amid growing international recognition for Northern Norway’s food culture. Earlier this year, Nordland was named European Region of Gastronomy 2028 for the county’s commitment to sustainable food production, local sourcing and culinary innovation.
