Accomplished winemaker Jacques de Klerk recently joined the team at South Africa’s La Residence, part of The Royal Portfolio. Positioned on a private, 30-acre estate in the Cape Winelands’ Franschhoek Valley, La Residence offers travelers a sumptuous base for exploring the region’s viticulture. The appointment of de Klerk enhances the opportunity for guests to enjoy an immersive and enlightening wine experience.

“As the Director of Viticulture and Winemaking for the independent Radford Dale Winery, Jacques is very familiar with the challenges and rewards of winemaking in the Western Cape,” said Liz Biden, founder, The Royal Portfolio. “Jacques knows the terroir, the unique climate, and how to coax the best from the soil, vines and grapes.”
Guests can enjoy their wine journey with a menu of seasonal dishes created by Executive Chef Lennard Marais, who utilizes produce and other ingredients grown on the estate’s working farm. As for grape varietals, the estate produces primarily Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Beginning with this year’s harvest, the property’s label wines will be made at Radford Dale’s Stellenbosch cellar.

“When we decided to revitalize our wine offering, our requirements stressed a commitment to sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of our operations,” said Wayve Kolevsohn, group beverage manager, The Royal Portfolio. “In Jacques, we’re confident that we’ve found a winemaker who intuitively understands our vision, and will bring it to life.”
Pamper yourself with a luxuriously relaxing treatment or therapy at the on-site spa, such as a 120-minute Kalahari Cocoon African body experience with massage, a mud clay application and a full-body wrap. Next, round out your stay with a visit to the nearby Motor Museum in L’Ormarins to marvel at the collection of vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles and related memorabilia displayed in chronological order within four halls.

There’s also horseback riding among the valley’s vineyards and orchards; golfing at Pearl Valley Golf Course; and the opportunity to cycle, hike or stroll at your own pace through the lush valley landscape.
