Bogotá, Colombia, is on the brink of one of the largest sports and urban transformations in its history. Legendary Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín is set to make way for a state-of-the-art, world-class sports arena. The development is expected not only to eliminate the historic El Campin stadium itself, but also to reshape the role of sport and entertainment in the Colombian capital.

The city’s historic El Campin soccer stadium, built in 1938, will be demolished and a new stadium will be built in a nearby district, an area destined to become a mecca for sports and entertainment.

Working with Sencia, a global organization where art, culture, sports, football, entertainment and entrepreneurship interact, and engineering firm WSP, BDP Pattern will design and build a new stadium in the middle of a new, mixed-use destination for sports, music, culture and leisure in Bogotá.

“The object is to “build an entirely brand-new stadium, along with other new sports complexes in the surrounding area, which will be among the most modern in Latin America,” said Bogotá Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan.

The new stadium will have a capacity of 50,000, up from the current 39,500 at El Campin. The new stadium will feature a retractable roof, enabling it to be used year-round for programming, sports and concerts. The new stadium will be built alongside the existing El Campín stadium, meaning football matches will continue without interruption in El Campin during the new stadium’s construction. El Campín is currently home to Bogota’s Millonarios F.C. and Club Independiente Santa Fe, two of the city’s top soccer teams, who will inherit the new stadium, as well.

The $500 million project is led by Sencia, a consortium formed from the original promoters of the public-private partnership behind the renovation initiative. For concerts and large-scale events, flexible configurations of the stands and pitch will allow capacity to increase to approximately 70,000 attendees. This will make the new El Campín one of the largest and most versatile venues in Colombia, capable of hosting international-level events.

Currently in the design phase, the project will incorporate energy-efficient systems, local materials and green spaces reflecting the city’s unique landscape. Bogotá is renowned for its terrain combining urban life with stunning natural beauty. The city is surrounded by the Andes mountains, offering breathtaking views and a variety of natural areas to explore. The master plan will see the new stadium operate independently and simultaneously within the new district.

“By placing football and live entertainment at the center of an exciting new district, we are creating a place that will transform not just Bogotá’s urban and cultural landscape but help define a bold new identity for Colombia on the global sports stage,” said Lindsay Johnston, director and co-founder, BDP Pattern. “This project will prove that sports can be a catalyst for urban regeneration.”

The goal is to revitalize the surrounding area, attract tourists and create a new public space that will remain active beyond match days. The project aligns with Bogotá’s broader urban development strategy, which also includes major initiatives such as the construction of the metro system and the expansion of Transmilenio, Bogotá’s busy rapid-transit bus network covering 147 stations.

Work on the new project began in March 2026. According to the current timeline, the opening of the new stadium and additional district amenities is slated for 2028.

Sun, Sea, Cliffs and Bridges Beckon on the Pacific Coast Highway

On one side, waves breathe in and out across wide stretches of sand or explode against jagged rocks, sending spray shooting into the air. On the other side, the scenery changes: Cliffs rise like walls, vineyards clip past in neat rows, pine trees line the road. Between these, cities give way to small communities with art galleries, local restaurants and shops selling beachwear.
