The Bahamas is renowned for its cruise port and hotels so big you need apps to navigate them. But in Arawak Cay, there are apps of a different kind to be had — those served on a plate.
The Nassau neighborhood, known by locals as The Fish Fry, serves up a veritable buffet of flavors, mouthwatering aromas, vibrant colors and joyous sounds. This hub near the harbor is about more than food, however; it’s about community, and there’s a lot more than fresh catch to tempt the palate. Whether at a steakhouse or jerk-chicken shack on the beach, visitors and Bahamians alike rub elbows and toast tempting tastes every night of the week.
Those lucky enough might catch a whiff or nibble of rock oven bread, a traditional specialty prepared fresh from the central hearth at this West Bay Street promenade. No matter who you’re with or when, however, one of the most popular activities contributes to the ongoing debate over who has the best conch salad and preparation. Cracked versions are battered and deep-fried, while ceviche-like scorched options are spiced with onions, lime and peppers. On especially hot days, you’ll find most visitors at Drifters’ bright blue, green and yellow tables adding the sweet tang of pineapple and mango for tropical versions.
For another conch variation, check out the golden-fried fritters at Goldie’s Conch House, which pair perfectly with another of its Bahamian specialties: sky juice. The refresher features gin, coconut milk or coconut water, condensed milk, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. More than one often gives visitors enough liquid courage to grab the Goldie’s mic for karaoke on Saturday and Sunday nights. Or try Nassau-brewed Kalik beer, the locals’ favorite lager, named for the sound of cowbells played during Junkanoo festivals.
Seasonal parades are the Bahamas’ answer to Rio’s carnival, and bands use the open stage at Arawak Cay to practice their happy horn- and drum-heavy beats.

The sounds and the flavors are big and bold in Arawak Cay, and ubiquitous Caribbean staples such as whole red snapper and peas and rice are typically prepared with Scotch bonnet or habanero peppers. But for those who prefer a little sweet with their heat, guava duff is a can’t-miss treat. Just about any restaurant or pastel-colored stand has its own version of the dessert, but the neighborhood’s latest edition — The New Duff bakery and museum — provides a little food for thought behind the pillowing pudding rolled with fruit and topped with rum sauce.

Oct 12, 2026The Quest for Quiet: Choose the Best Noise-Canceling Headsets to Suit Your Travel Style
Back in the 1990s, when I was traveling on my airline pilot father’s standby passes, there weren’t many ways for passengers to cancel ambient noise while in flight. I remember squishing and twisting little yellow pairs of foam earplugs with my fingers and letting them rise in my ears while I swirled ice around in my Pawberry Punch and ripped open a cold pouch of Delta-branded Biscoff cookies. Much has changed in travel technology since those days; and although I’ll forever miss Dusty the Delta Air Lion, I’m happy to report no more need for plastic ear foam.
