For those seeking a quieter experience, continue until the end of the bamboo path and you’ll find the entrance to Ōkōchi Sansō Villa, once the retreat of famed Japanese actor Denjiro Okochi. Unlike the imperial villas requiring advance reservations, Ōkōchi Sansō is open to all and often delightfully uncrowded. The price of admission (1,000 yen; about $7) includes a traditional Japanese sweet and a cup of frothy, earthy, matcha tea served in a tranquil teahouse overlooking the city. The villa grounds boast expansive views of Kyoto, a series of meticulously landscaped gardens, and winding paths through mossy groves and hidden teahouses.

As you walk back toward Randen Saga Station, you’ll find a charming stretch of shops selling locally made bamboo crafts. From delicate tea whisks to chopsticks and woven baskets, these handmade souvenirs connect you more deeply to the material that defines the grove.

From the sacred shrines to these artisan workshops, visitors are enveloped in tradition, the very traditions that intertwine daily life in Kyoto.

Before leaving, hop aboard the Randen trolley, a vintage tram that will carry you back to the city center (about 20 minutes to Shijō-Ōmiya, then a short transfer to Kyoto Station). The ride provides a fittingly nostalgic end to an experience that feels almost dreamlike.
