From sea to shining sea, America encompasses a rich variety of Native communities, from the Sioux of the Great Plains to the Navajo of the high desert to the Arapaho of the Rocky Mountains. Their cultural history and ancient heritage are preserved and practiced today in festivals, galleries, museums and restaurants across all 50 states — you just have to know where to look. From the Sonoran Desert to the Black Hills, read on for how to honor indigenous peoples while traveling across the United States.

Our first stop is Alaska, where the country’s largest Native population (roughly 18 percent of the state) resides. Visit Ketchikan, home to the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples of Southeast Alaska, and peruse galleries including Crazy Wolf Studio, Arctic Spirit Gallery and Soaring Eagle Native Art. (The Silver Hand symbol verifies the authenticity of Native art.) Book a hosted tour of Saxman Totem Park on Revillagigedo Island for a truly immersive experience. According to Joe Williams, Where the Eagle Walks guide, “If we don’t tell our stories, they’re going to get lost.”

Next, we head southwest to Scottsdale, Arizona, to learn about traditional crafts from more than 200 artisans at the Native Art Market. Afterward, head next door to Frybread Lounge, the city’s first Native-owned and -operated restaurant. Peruse Native American artifacts at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West, and add the Arizona Indian Festival, an inter-tribal event raising awareness of indigenous communities, to your calendar. Neighboring New Mexico hosts another annual event showcasing Native American heritage, the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, dating back to 1922. Additionally, Albuquerque’s Indian Pueblo Cultural Center showcases indigenous culture from ancient times to present day.

Head north to South Dakota to visit the Crazy Horse Memorial, honoring the 19th-century Lakota warrior, and visit Aktá Lakota Museum & Cultural Center. Book a ticket for South Dakota Symphony Orchestra’s Lakota Music Project, a modern interpretation of indigenous traditions. Other U.S. destinations include Exhibit C Gallery, a First American art gallery owned by Oklahoma’s Chickasaw Nation; and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, the first national museum devoted exclusively to Native Americans, with locations in Washington, D.C., and New York City.
