In the new series Pole to Pole, Will Smith and National Geographic take viewers on a journey through all seven continents. Smith starts his journey in the South Pole with help from Antarctic Logistics & Expeditions, the largest and most experienced private operator working in Antarctica. (You may have noticed the company’s blue logo on the side of his plane.)

Thanks to this new show, fans get a glimpse of how truly unique of a destination the South Pole is. Since the show focuses on travel through all seven continents, the South Pole comprises only a fraction of the show, but it deserves far more attention.

There are Actually 2 South Poles

The Geographic South Pole is set exactly 90 degrees south, while the Ceremonial South Pole, the red-and-white striped pole, is just a few steps away. All 360 lines of longitude meet at the Geographic South Pole, offering a chance to walk around the world in just a few steps.

12 National Flags Fly

The Ceremonial South Pole is surrounded by the national flags of the 12 countries that signed the Antarctic Treaty in 1959.

There’s a U.S. Scientific Research Base

The Geographic South Pole is home to The Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, a U.S. scientific research base. The research base was named after the first two explorers to reach 90 degrees south, Roald Amundsen and Robert F. Scott.

The Location is Always Moving

Due to the continent being a moving mass of ice, 90 degrees south shifts about 10 meters over the course of a year. This is recognized every year on Jan. 1 with a reposition ceremony at the new 90 degrees.

A Competition is Held Annually to Design New Marker

That being said, every year, scientists in Antarctica hold a competition to design the new marker for the Geographic South Pole. The winning marker replaces the old one at the repositioning ceremony.

Only One Private Camp is at South Pole

For example, the Union Glacier Camp and South Pole Camp resort operate on Chilean Time (EST+2), while the South Pole and Amundsen-Scott Station operate on New Zealand Time (EST+16), even though it’s a U.S. base.
