Etihad Airways announced the launch of Switzerland-based Etihad Regional. Operated as a partnership with Switzerland’s Darwin Airline, the regional carrier is based in Lugano with a major hub in Geneva (GVA). “Etihad Regional will provide a unique opportunity to strengthen vitally important regional networks and connect them to the rapidly expanding global network of Etihad Airways,” said James Hogan, president and CEO, Etihad Airways. “We will choose partners, as we have done with Darwin Airline, which share our passion for delivering an outstanding service to travelers, with greater choice and more convenience.” Etihad Regional currently operates service to 15 destinations in Europe and plans to more than double its route network to 34 destinations by mid-2014. Subject to regulatory approval, Etihad will acquire a 33 percent stake in Darwin Airline, making it the seventh member of Etihad’s international alliance.
