The gateway to the South Pacific, Papeete offers the promise of adventure to further tropical locales teeming with white-sand beaches, coconut palms and fiery sunsets. The capital of Tahiti and French Polynesia, Papeete is the primary hub for travelers seeking the atolls and archipelagos of the South Pacific — from the blackened shores of Samoa to the turquoise waters of Tonga.
But travelers would be remiss to overlook Papeete en route to islands even farther afield from the Tahitian metropolis. While “metropolis” may seem a bit of an overstatement for travelers arriving from the crowded sidewalks of cities like London or New York, Papeete nevertheless boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere — an alluring blend of bustling downtown streets and tropical charm.
Situated along the northwestern shore of the island of Tahiti, Papeete consists of 11 primary neighborhoods (or quartiers) which extend both inland and along the coast. With a population of roughly 27,000 in the city and 124,000 in the greater urban area, Papeete remains the largest city in the South Pacific and serves as a gateway to exploring Polynesian culture, from the vibrant murals and street art to the annual heritage festivals (Heiva is held every July) and the markets teeming with local handicrafts.
Spend an afternoon browsing enchanting artisanal wares at Le Marché — the Mapuru a Paraita market proves a treasure trove for local crafts. Expect to discover an impressive array of Monoi oil (a Tahitian solution for all ailments), Tahitian vanilla (without having to board a 45-minute flight to Taha’a, the Vanilla Island itself ) and an endless selection of pareos available in all the vivid colors and textures of the South Pacific. And if it’s pearls you’re after, the Robert Wan Pearl Museum specializes in the black variety for which Tahiti is so famous.
Stroll amidst the tropical blooms of Bougainville Park or Paofai Gardens, and at night head to Vai’ete Square to taste the flavors of Tahiti at one of the many food trucks (roulettes) that transform the neighborhood into an intoxicating open-air culinary market. Expect everything from fresh fish and handmade crêpes (to be expected on an island with French influences) to Chinese delicacies (decidedly less so).
Bora Bora may get all the attention as a couple’s retreat, but after the honeymoon, only one destination in Tahiti is guaranteed to leave you wanting more all year long. So on your next sojourn to the South Pacific, spend some time in Papeete — we guarantee it will feel like a paradise found.
