In a tragic incident Feb. 2, a Daallo Airlines flight experienced what is being called an explosion after about 15 minutes of flight time, after which the Airbus A321 returned to Mogadishu Airport.
Immediate news stories suggested two or possibly three people were ejected from the plane due to the hole created in the fuselage, while still others stated no passengers were harmed during the incident. An official press release from Daallo Airlines stated only one passenger was reported “missing” upon landing, with an additional two passengers experiencing mild injuries. The body of an elderly man was later found in a nearby field, which some suspect is the passenger in question.
The press release from Daallo Airlines made a point to mention their previous record of 25 fatality-free years, stating they are both registered and maintained by European Union regulations, with all of their pilots sourced from European countries. As of Feb. 3, the situation is under investigation by Civil Aviation authorities, Hermes Airlines and Airbus.
