Yes, the fabulous storybook Neuschwanstein Castle is still on the list, but the gigantic Europa-Park amusement complex in Rust has replaced it in the top slot in a new survey of most-visited tourist spots in Germany. Rollercoasters and other high-adrenaline rides, themed districts including Adventure Land, Minimoy’s Kingdom and Grimm’s Enchanted Forest; zones that showcase a selection of world countries, ice revues and over six hours each day of shows make it a huge year-round hit with families.

At number two, Neuschwanstein in southern Bavaria is still a must-see. Built by Ludwig II based on a design that blended details from Wartburg Castle with mythical elements from Wagner’s operatic play Parsifal, the castle’s interior is embellished with extravagant designs that make reference to many of Wagner’s works. Also in the top five are the UNESCO Word Heritage site of the stunningly Gothic Cologne Cathedral (3); the rambling, romantic ruins of Heidelberg Castle and the city’s old quarter (4); and Berlin’s iconic Brandenburg Gate (5), built between 1789 and 1791 on Pariser Platz in city center, and now a symbol of Germany’s reunification.
