So, maybe I’m a big dork, but I have to say, I’m excited about today’s official opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL. Ok, go ahead, you can tease me! I was a big fan of the books. In fact, J. K. Rowling‘s imagination and creativity re-inspired me to pursue a career based in writing. The movies hardly did the books justice, so I’m eager to see how the new theme park stacks up. Early reports are enthusiastic. Not only will the theme park delight children (and grownups!) from around the world, but it will also bring even more tourism dollars into the attraction-heavy Florida city, already home to Walt Disney World‘s four major parks and the two Universal Studios amusement parks, not to mention Sea World. With the oil spill threatening to hurt Florida’s Gulf tourism, the theme park could help keep maintain tourism during this difficult time. Well, I have no plans to travel to Wizarding World any time soon, but I took a gander at the website, and there is plenty to experience. As far as rides go, the park offers three — Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Dragon Challenge and Flight of the Hippogriff. For dining, guests can sample butterbeer at The Three Broomsticks. Visitors can also shop at many of the same stores as Harry and his friends — Honeydukes, Ollivanders and many more.
