Winterland is back at Gallagher Way outside of Wrigley Field. Through the end of the year, its holiday fun includes Christkindlmarket Wrigleyville, Santa’s Workshop, Gallagher Ice Rink and more.

Debuting in 1996, Christkindlmarket was so popular it expanded to several other Illinois and Wisconsin locations. A free market, it features food, beverages and trinkets. The aroma of gingerbread, apple cider and other seasonal specialties is wonderful. There are live performances, a huge tree lighting and other fun activities.

The Gallagher Ice Rink stays open through Feb. 15. Adjacent to the ballpark, it is an 8,000-square-foot ice rink. It is equally fun skating in the daylight when you can see the skyline and at night under the glowing lights. There are special events scheduled, including ice bumper cars, curling and skating lessons. I could use the lessons, but I still had fun shuffling on the ice.

Upon leaving, I stopped at nearby Jeni’s. I don’t eat much ice cream, but I make the exception for Jeni’s. It is simply the best.
On the way home, I made one more quick stop. My artist friend Ali Cantarella has painted many murals around the Chicago area. This one is on an outside wall of Hey, I Thought of You, a cool gift shop featuring local artists.
