Montréal was the perfect destination for an October weekend getaway. I chose to bring some love to our northerly neighbors, who have been reluctant to visit us lately. Despite the U.S. government shutdown and recent Air Canada labor issues, I didn’t encounter any travel problems. In fact, my flights were among the nicest I’ve experienced.

Le Centre Sheraton was the perfect choice, right in the heart of the city. I learned it recently underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation. My corner room was bright and spacious with a great view. Fun note: On Sunday the American NFL and MLB games were on TV, and the play-by-play was in French. My three years of studying it in high school weren’t of much help there since no one needed to find a library or a pencil, but I could still follow along. The concierge lounge was large and comfy with a delightful staff. We had an added treat since there was a full moon both nights, shining in all its glory as if to add its bienvenue as we oohed and aahed looking out the window.

While the leaves were turning and the calendar indicated it was autumn, it was a balmy 85 degrees both days, perfect for exploring on foot. My adventure began in Vieux/Old Montréal with its shops, restaurants, taverns and cobblestone streets. Nearby, Notre Dame Cathedral was undergoing a facelift, with the entire left side shrouded in scaffolding. It was still impressive. Next stop was Centre Bell, the stadium where the Canadiens play NHL hockey. The plaza outside the main entrance is dedicated to the Hall of Fame Habs, as they are known, with plaques and statues. I paid homage to Guy Lafleur and Maurice ‘Rocket’ Richard. I also enjoyed chatting with visitors from Australia who confided they were Chicago Blackhawks fans — but not in front of Guy and Rocket, of course.

On Day Two I visited McGill University, undergoing major construction. It seemed every single building was being renovated, and unfortunately, that made it difficult to get around. Locals love to boast that one of McGill’s most famous alums is William Shatner. Alas, Captain Kirk wasn’t on campus that day, but I did see Molson Stadium, where college athletes compete. A most appropriate Canadian sponsor!

Finally, I visited the home of late singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen to pay my respects and to offer my gratitude. After all, he did write the song “Suzanne.” When I was younger, I really did believe he wrote it for me. Mine is spelled differently but pronounced the same way. The doorstep contained handwritten notes from fans. His spirit lives on.

During my visit, every person I encountered, whether local or visitor, was warm and friendly in the spirit of hospitality and mutual admiration. O, Canada, indeed!
