I admit, I wasn’t overly excited to see The Fisherman’s Daughters at Milwaukee Repertory Theater. My Wisconsin friends said it was a love letter to Door County, an area near Green Bay. Unlike a lot of Chicago Bears fans, I do not have contempt for Green Bay, but I was imagining a cheesy (pun intended) Hallmark movie.
I was open-minded, though, and Milwaukee Rep never lets me down. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.
Set in 1908 Wisconsin, The Fisherman’s Daughters is the story of two sisters trying to save their land left by their deceased father. Chicago teacher Nora returned to help older sister Sarah keep the land from being taken as part of a planned park. The story also includes the men interested in the land and the sisters.
Kelly Doherty (Sarah) and Eva Nimmer (Nora) play so well off each other. Clearly Nora is more intelligent, but seemingly not as people-smart, despite living in the big city. That dynamic supplies humor, angst and several intense (both good and bad) moments. In the end, it is a heartwarming story of two sisters finding common ground and rediscovering each other. One incredibly touching scene has Nora sharing a book with Sarah, who never learned to read.

Songwriter and playwright Katie Dahl wrote the book, music and lyrics. She brilliantly captured the sometimes complex sibling relationships. She wrote each character with many layers that gradually get revealed.

Alex Campea and Chase Stoeger are excellent in their roles as antagonists. Although their characters are necessary, the stars are the sisters.

Once again, Milwaukee Rep did not disappoint. While I liked other Milwaukee Rep productions better, it is only because they set a very high bar. I thoroughly enjoyed and would recommend The Fisherman’s Daughters.
