I’m always looking for something new and interesting to do with my family. This past weekend we decided to check out indoor rock climbing. Philadelphia Rock Gym has four locations in the Philadelphia area; the 10,000-square-foot Wyncote location is closest to me.
They have a family package with an hour-long instructional lesson available. We were taught how to harness correctly and how to work the carabiner and ATC device. That equipment makes up the “belay device.” Belaying refers to various techniques used to keep tension on a rope so the climber does not fall far.
Once we learned how to work the equipment and the instructor felt safe turning us loose, we were able to find our own wall to practice. Climbing looks easier than it actually is; but if you like to challenge yourself, it is a great way to get some exercise, learn trust and teamwork and to get a few laughs from your kids when you can’t climb higher than they can.
