My family holds an annual tradition of vacationing in North Carolina’s Outer Banks.

We have stayed on the same block every year since I was 2 years old and are joined by multiple family friends who all rent along the same street. This year was quite special, as I was able to experience the tradition with my own family.

It was my son’s first year in the OBX, and I can confidently say he approved. While I was raised in the Philadelphia area and the Jersey shore is a staple vacation spot for many, the OBX, for me, tends to have a more relaxing atmosphere, particularly in South Nags Head. There are no stores, restaurants, bars or boardwalks, and to go anywhere you must drive, unless you are fine with walking far, but I wouldn’t recommend it.

The point is, there aren’t many distractions. You have no choice but to really unwind and relax on the beach with your friends and family. I appreciate the simplicity. Now that I have a child of my own, I realize how nice it is to enjoy our time on the beach with no amusement park rides or constant walks to the boardwalk, just good ol’ fashioned fun playing in the sand and water. This vacation setting is ideal for quality time with your family or even just pure relaxation.

While I can’t say we won’t spend time down on the boardwalks of the Jersey Shore with our little guy, I am glad that we have the OBX tradition to pass along and experience with him also.
