Major League Baseball’s Opening Day is one of the best sports days of the year. Opening Day represents new hope for a successful season. For my beloved Chicago Cubs, who have been to one World Series in my life, that hope is usually lost by midseason, replaced by the familiar “wait ’til next year” refrain.

My day started at Country Club, a pub just south of Wrigley Field. Media outlet CHGO hosted a pre-game party and live show. I caught up with Kacy Standohar, from CHGO, who I knew from her time as a reporter with the Chicago Bandits.

Making my way to Wrigley, I popped in to Slugger’s Bar, where WSCR sports radio also hosted a live broadcast. I chatted a bit with hosts Leila Rahimi and Laurence Holmes during their break.

Before entering the ballpark, I meandered around Gallagher Way, soaking in the energy. A band entertained the growing crowd. Folks danced, played catch and, of course, debated how the team would do this season.
The Cubs won 4–0, scoring all four runs in the third inning. Thanks to the new rules, the game lasted only two hours and 21 minutes. I savored the win for a while before leaving. The Cubs were 1–0!
Of course, the team would not go undefeated. Actually, they lost the next three games, but it didn’t diminish the joy of Opening Day.
