There’s nothing like a good air show to get you excited about your next flight. The Mid-Atlantic Air Museum in Reading, Pa., hosts a World War II weekend every year in June. This is a fantastic opportunity to see a range of aircraft that carried aviation technology forward thanks to the motivation of the war. There were many early commercial aircraft closely linked to or inspired by planes from the war. The Douglas DC-3 is very like the C-47 transport, and the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was derived from the B-29 Super Fortress. Even Lockheed, producer of the Constellation, made planes during the war. One almost has to stop and wonder what commercial aviation would be like today if not for the war. This event and others like it are great opportunities to relax and learn about the legacy of the aircraft we fly in so often.
