Lunch and a Show

by mhunt

On Sunday I had the day free and went down to Radio City Music Hall. I bought a ticket to the Cirque du Soleil show, Zarkana. I had about an hour to spare before the show and needed lunch. I forced myself to break my habit of going towards Fifth Avenue and walked west towards Sixth Avenue. I stopped at Bar Americain, a Bobby Flay restaurant, and ordered a hamburger at the bar. I have eaten at Bar Americain before, but usually for business lunches. The brunch menu was on display at 1 p.m. on Sunday, and I guarantee I’ll be back for brunch one day soon. However, I had my heart set on a burger and was very happy I followed my heart. The bartender saw my face when I tried it and asked if I liked it — I loved it. It tasted just like the hamburgers from a steak restaurant on Long Island my grandmother would take us to growing up, McClusky’s. McClusky’s is no longer there, but the memories are; and thanks to Bobby Flay’s perfect burger, the weekend took a nostalgic turn for me. I highly recommend you check out the restaurant the next time you’re in Midtown. Following lunch, I attended the show. I have only seen the Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas and loved each one more than the last. The talent in Zarkana was, like the other shows, world class and mesmerizing. The performers were so talented I almost forgot they were real people. The show as a whole was great, but not as good as the Vegas shows, and I believe it was because of the venue. I find Radio City to be one of the most magical theaters to walk into, but it was like having two big personalities in the same room trying to overpower each other, Radio City and Zarkana. Separately they are fantastic, but they just couldn’t gel together to get the perfect overall effect. All in all it was a fantastic Sunday. Would I go again to see Zarkana? Yes, but I would try to find half-price tickets and save the money for dessert at Bar Americain. — Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher

Now’s the Time to See Giza, the Nile and Beyond

All archaeology-obsessed eyes turned hopefully toward Egypt earlier this year when the highly anticipated Grand Egyptian Museum outside Cairo finally began welcoming visitors after construction delays, funding roadblocks and political upheaval in the region (among other factors) conspired to keep things delayed for many long years. The museum’s cherry on the top is slated to open this summer, with the July opening of the museum’s 20-plus-years-in-the-making Tutankhamen galleries and accompanying cache of some 5,000 artifacts and treasures from the boy king’s tomb.
