Since virtual reality experience EXP opened in September, I have heard great reviews. Last weekend, I learned firsthand how amazing it is.
Housed in a 26,000-square-foot venue, EXP is an immersive, interactive experience merging art, history and technology. Developed by PHI Studio in partnership with the Village of Rosemont, the debut featured two works produced by French company Excurio.

Horizon of Khufu is a journey inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. The virtual trip includes restricted chambers, sailing the Nile, a recreation of Pharaoh Khufu’s burial site and more.
Life Chronicles traces the history of life on Earth. Starting with the Cambrian Age, the journey continues with ancient creatures and the development of mankind.
Upon arrival, I watched a short instructional video before a staffer fitted me with a VR headset. Although it fit fine over my glasses, I was told it adjusts to your eyesight. Taking off my glasses, I was amazed at how clear things seemed. As soon as I put on the headset, the wild black and white room was transformed to ancient Egypt.
The staffer explained a blue light outline on the ground would indicate where I should be. If I strayed, a red grid would appear indicating a wall or other person. A raised hand would bring a staffer to help, but I made it through without needing help.
The 45-minute trip started with virtual guide Mona. Completely lifelike, Mona was informative, adding just enough humor. Midway through the tour, a cat took over as the guide.
The journey included being propelled to incredible heights, as well as crouching through caves. Every step was so realistic. As I rose to the top of the pyramids, I felt the rush of the heights without even moving.
I have to give praise to the staff. Everyone was extremely helpful, patient and informative. They all seemed to really enjoy being there.
Being my first big VR experience, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. I got a lot more than I imagined, though. I immediately called several friends and told them they needed to go.
In the entrance area, there were coming attraction banners. New experiences are on the way next year.
