I spent July 4 at Croton Gorge Park, about a 40-minute train ride from Grand Central Terminal.
Home to the New Croton Dam, it’s the third-largest hand-hewn structure in the world, after the Great Pyramids and the Great Wall of China. With more than 95 acres, there are many hiking trails to choose from. I chose Old Croton Trail, a 26-mile trail that runs parallel to Metro North’s Hudson Line.
After my walk, which included walking over the dam, I met my family for lunch in Ossining, New York, at The Boat House.
The Boat House overlooks the Hudson River, where all the boats dock. It is a casual atmosphere, mainly serving fresh seafood. I ordered the linguini with clam sauce and grilled shrimp and a margarita on the rocks with salt. The linguini was cooked perfectly al dente, and the fish was so fresh, I ate the entire thing. After dinner we enjoyed live music and watched fireworks up and down the Hudson River. The weather was perfect for exercise, a great meal, good company and a beautiful fireworks display.
