From Hamptons to Hamburg

by Rebecca Darakhshan

Sep 5, 2023

Stepping away from my Hamptons blog series, I’m excited to take you on a journey across the Atlantic to Europe, where I recently visited the charming city of Hamburg, Germany.

Hamburg holds a special place in my heart as it’s the city where my family resides. Summers spent here during my upbringing hold some of my fondest memories. Our first day was dedicated to tradition: We headed straight to the renowned Hamburg Dom, a colossal city fair that takes place three times a year. From exciting rides such as spinning teacups and fun houses to indulging in authentic German bratwurst, every moment brought back my childhood joy.Hamburg

The rest of my time in Hamburg was a seamless blend of revisiting cherished spots and exploring new facets of the city. The main town along Alster Canal exudes sophistication with high-end shopping, beautiful City Hall, the iconic St. Michael’s Church and chic cafés with the best cappuccinos and German pastries. Hamburg is a haven for food enthusiasts such as myself, and here are a few of my recommendations:

  • Alex in Alster Pavilion: This restaurant offers water views with great dishes, cocktails and an extensive dessert menu. Don’t miss the chicken schnitzel!
  • Café Condi at Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten: For an exquisite brunch experience, this café, nestled within the Fairmont hotel, is a true gem.
  • Block House: A renowned restaurant chain, Block House is synonymous with delectable steaks.
  • Jim Block: Sharing the same management as Block House, Jim Block offers a more casual setting with mouthwatering burgers and sandwiches, ideal for a quick and delicious meal on the go.

My European journey doesn’t stop in Hamburg. The next chapter of my European adventure takes me to the stunning Côte d’Azur in France. Stay tuned!Hamburg

Why Japan Is Best Explored by Sea with Princess

Japan is a destination that rewards repeat visits because no two regions — or seasons —  feel quite the same. One moment, you’re wandering through centuries-old geisha districts in Kanazawa. The next, you’re watching neon reflections dance across Tokyo streets long after midnight.

Review: Hartwell House

In the library of Hartwell House, I checked the latest weather forecast on my phone. Most immediately, I made sure we had time for a walk in the 90 acres of gardens before the arrival of thunderstorms. I was also monitoring the next day’s weather, which was expected to break the highest ever June temperature in England. Through my smartphone, I benefited from a science that began, in its modern form, in that very room. There, in 1850, the Royal Meteorological Society was founded.
