Flying WestJet

by Angelique Platas

Jul 29, 2018

On my way back from Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, I hopped on my first WestJet flight for my connection in Vancouver (YVR). WestJet, a small, low-cost airline operating in Canada, was my fourth flight in a few days, so I had a few options for comparison.

The small aircraft was full, but, luckily, I found room for my bag and carry-on. The overhead bins were smaller than I’m used to on U.S. flights, but I packed light, so everything fit nicely.

My seat was comfortable and a bit roomier than I’d expect on a low-cost airline. Overall, I sat easy for a few hours on my connecting flight to Vancouver. The flight attendant staff was friendly and brief: not a lot of chatter and attention but enough to move in and out of the narrow walkway for service.

The airline came about in 1996 to compete with the larger, more expensive airlines in Canada. Prices range significantly, as WestJet flies more than 100 routes across Europe, Asia, Africa, the United States, Oceania, Caribbean, Central America and, of course, Canada.

I’d recommend flying within the massive country of Canada by way of WestJet for economy purposes. Some domestic flights are as low as $60, and the website is easy to navigate. Peruse deals and discounts when connecting to another province in Canada.

What Maui Visitors Need to Know

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
