An Afternoon with the Chicago Dogs

by John Wroblewski

My friends and I enjoyed a beautiful Sunday afternoon watching Minor League Baseball at Impact Field. The Chicago Dogs beat the Milwaukee Milkmen to make it even better.

Prior to the game, I talked to manager Butch Hobson, a player from my youth. Manager of the Dogs for their entire existence, Hobson led the team to the play-offs last season and has them in first place this season.

We talked to a few other players and coaches before making our way to our seats. We bought the bottomless Cokes (free refills all game) and some food before settling into our seats near third base.

The Dogs jumped to a 9–0 lead, and one of my friends caught a foul ball. Things looked great. Then the Milkmen roared back with seven runs in one inning. Fortunately, the Dogs ended the rally to escape with a close 9–7 win.

There’s a fun rivalry between mascots Squeeze and Ketchup, anthropomorphic condiment bottles. Squeeze usually gets the better of it, because Chicagoans look with disdain at ketchup on dogs.

The scenery at a Dogs game at Impact Field is unique. Located between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Chicago, expressways are the backdrop beyond the outfield, while planes fly in and out above.

The Bishop’s Lodge’s Bunkhouse: A Rustic, Historic Getaway

Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a small town that’s big on historic landmarks, buildings, parks and Western lore. Many of its most fascinating structures also happen to be hotels, including Bishop’s Lodge, which extends the city’s specific charms from the streets into the public areas and private suites and rooms. While most of the properties within historic buildings are upscale, Bishop’s Lodge is now a member of Auberge Resorts Collection thanks to a painstaking restoration, luxury appointments, commitment to personal service and wide range of exclusive activities.
