Loyola men’s basketball opened its season October 10, followed on October 27 by the women’s basketball opener. Heading into season, Loyola held its inaugural ‘Blers Bash Basketball Fan Fest.
Held at Gentile Arena, home of both teams, the event included basketball skills stations, face-painting for kids, bags and other games, player autographs and photo opportunities, pizza and more. Loyola players and coaches shot baskets and gave general coaching tips to youngsters and some older folks, too. LU Wolf was on hand to add more fun.

This is an interesting season for both teams. The men’s team is coming off a rough 9–24 season. Entering his sixth season as head coach, Drew Valentine is 92–75 in his tenure. After winning 48 games over the previous two seasons, last year was a big disappointment. In talking with Valentine, he was very optimistic about the upcoming season, as were the players I met. They like the veteran team and are ready to prove they are much better than last season showed.

Drew Valentine
On the women’s side, Morgan Paige is preparing for her first season in charge. Paige inherits a team that went 16–18 last season. The team has a big international flavor with players from Greece, Spain, Australia, Canada and France.

Malick Diallo and Rosalie Mercille

MD Ntambue and Elias Rapieque

Audrey Deptula and Jayden Dawson

Donald Hand, Jr. and Gabby Wilke
I also got my first look at the new statue of Sister Jean. Unveiled in August on what would have been her 107th birthday, the cast bronze statue depicts Sister Jean seated and holding a basketball. A longtime member of the Loyola family, Sister Jean gained notoriety during a national television broadcast of the men’s team several years ago. Sister Jean passed away in October last year.

The fest was a lot of fun. With the great turnout, I would call it a major success. Now I really can’t wait for the seasons to begin. Go ‘Blers!

Oct 14, 2026Review: Villatel Resort Orlando
Opened March 2025, Villatel Resort Orlando is one of Orlando’s newest elevated resorts, but far more unique and private than you’ll find at many other resorts and hotels in the area. The name alone points to an experience beyond your typical hotel room or suite; here, you have the flexibility to select from a wide range of modern villas, ranging from four to nine bedrooms, as well as a series of Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy units.
