A few months ago, I took a trip to Boulder with my family, where we hiked, biked, sipped on brews and took in the scenery at every turn. My sister, who lives in Boulder, did all the planning. On our first day, we awoke early, rented bicycles and rode the bike paths connecting several small breweries nestled in the foothills. Set back in an industrial complex with no more than an “A” sign marking its location from the road, we found our favorite stop at Avery Brewing Company. For one dollar you get an ample-sized taste of any of their craft brews on tap daily. My favorite was the Maharaja Imperial Pale Ale. After a few brews, it was time for some food. Did I mention that several of the Avery brews exceed ten percent alcohol by volume? We headed over to the Boulder Creek Market in downtown Boulder. My jaw dropped at the variety of meats they sold. From ostrich to wild boar and everything in between, Boulder Creek Market had them all. I tried the wild boar sandwich, which had a serrano sauce that gave the smoky meat a wonderful kick. Everyone had something different to eat, and each was to die for. We continued our bicycle tour until we could barely hold the handlebars and ended our trip at the historic Boulder Theater for a Stephen Marley concert. The concert started off slow, mostly because the opening DJ was rather obnoxious. He continually changed songs halfway through and repeatedly yelled out, “Do you love reggae music?” After he left the stage, all was better as Stephen Marley came on stage. He put on a killer show that had the venue going crazy. I may not love reggae music, but Boulder has my heart. — Louis Cammiso, intern
