Knowing my interest in public art, my sister always lets me know when her Village of Tinley Park debuts Benches on the Avenue. In its 19th year, the popular public art program turns functional street benches into colorful, creative attractions. Located in downtown Tinley Park, the 20 benches will remain through October.

Every year the benches feature a different theme. Last year, Album Cover Tour was the theme. Previous years included Heroes and Villains, Classic TV and The Magic of Music. The colorful benches feature the work of both amateur and professional artists and provide spots to rest and enjoy the fantastic creations while strolling through town.

This year the theme is Animal Adventure, showcasing animals of all kinds. My favorite has several animals along with “Rawr Be Kind” across the seat back.

One of Tinley Park’s most popular attractions, the benches draw visitors and residents to the downtown area. I see the benches when visiting my sister, but I would make the 45-minute drive just to see the collection.

In addition to the benches, there are a lot of fun events planned for Tinley Park this summer including Cruise Nights, Music in the Plaza, the Downtown Block Party and more. Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre concerts include Styx, Steely Dan, The Black Keys and several others. I’m sure I’ll join my sister’s family for some fun in Tinley.
