Online travel specialists TravelBird released a study ranking international cities according to how welcoming they are, and Singapore takes the top spot.
With recent over-tourism challenges mounting, it can be difficult for local communities to welcome international travellers, often negatively affecting overall visitor experience. For this reason, TravelBird, among other travel companies, promote thoughtful travel and sustainable tourism.
The company’s recently released study was conducted to shine light on not only over-tourism and its impact on residents and communities, but to promote those destinations making significant efforts to welcome guests responsibly.
TravelBird analyzed the global top 500 tourist destinations based on factors that make visitors feel welcome, such as a warm port of entry, citizens’ happiness, visitor safety, openness to host tourists and English-language proficiency.
The company also ran a poll asking more than 15,000 travel journalists how welcoming they found each city based on personal experience.
Taking the top spot as most hospitable destination is Singapore, due in large part to its efforts to welcome tourists at airports, train stations and other travel hubs; its openness to host tourists; and its capacity to welcome large numbers of tourists. Following closely behind in the rankings is Stockholm, with a high score for tourist happiness, English proficiency and its welcoming nature. Closing out the top five are Helsinki, San Francisco and Rotterdam.
“We undertook this study as the first step towards a more sustainable future. It’s a call-to-action to ourselves and to fellow tour operators, to residents and local governments in those places that are worst affected by over-tourism, to work together to find solutions to this problem. We believe tourism can have a positive impact on local destinations; with a clear understanding of the issues at hand, innovative thinking and common sense legislation, we can preserve and protect them for the future,” said Steven Klooster, CEO, TravelBird.
