Long before tourists flocked to the Statue of Liberty as the symbol of the greatest melting pot in the world, and decades before Washington, D.C., was built as a testament to democracy, there were 13 colonial capitals that started it all.
This year the entire United States celebrates its robust history with special commemorations for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. But there’s perhaps no better trifecta of destinations for revolutionary travel experiences than Williamsburg, Boston and Philadelphia.
VIRGINIA
Blacksmiths clanging, the heat of a glassblowing studio and clopping horses pulling carriages provide a bustling immersion into an 18th-century city in Colonial Williamsburg.
It all comes to life year-round at the world’s largest living history museum. But this year there’s even more in store for America’s 250th, with festivals and fireworks aplenty. July Fourth, for instance, will include the rousing cadence and colors of a fife and drum corps and readings of the Declaration of Independence, all preceding a red, white and blue pyrotechnics display.
Celebrations get into full swing throughout Williamsburg and the rest of the Historic Triangle that includes Jamestown and Yorktown in April. What’s old will be new again with that month’s opening of the Campbell Archaeology Center, where time travel gets more hands- on than ever thanks to new public archaeology labs and classrooms. Visitors will enjoy a more holistic picture of how Williamsburg was built and continues to evolve when they see — and in some cases, touch — more than what’s unearthed piece by piece, according to Jack Gary, archaeology director. “Williamsburg guests often get to see the excavation process, the stuff actually coming out of the ground, but until now they wouldn’t get to see what happens behind the scenes … what happens in our laboratory,” he said

The city has always been about the bigger picture, said Ed Harris, president, Visit Williamsburg. “The nature of learning is immersive, hands-on and diverse. There’s only so much that can fit into a history book. The archaeology center takes it to the next level and allows us to tell stories with a broader lens.”
Beyond artifacts like ceramics and glass, shells and marbles that provide glimpses into how America’s early settlers ate, decorated and played, exhibition spaces also will demonstrate how they worshipped and learned. In particular, Williamsburg continues to dig deeper into the 1760 Williamsburg Bray School for free and enslaved Black children, and the African Baptist Meeting House and Burial Ground. The site was the original location of the First Baptist Church, one of the country’s earliest Black congregations.
At Jamestown, journeying to the past means stepping ashore in 1607 — 13 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts — and interacting with Powhattan Indian interpreters. On Jamestown Day in May and beyond, recreations of the three ships that sailed from England will be open to adventurers.
Yorktown also gets on board to offer up maritime marvels in June as one of just five U.S. host cities for the Sail250 tall ships. The Sail Yorktown Festival will include historical wooden-masted sailing and military vessels, including a replica of the Godspeed, one of the Jamestown settlers’ trio.
MASSACHUSETTS
Boston was the starting point for patriot Paul Revere on his legendary “One if by land, two if by sea” midnight ride — so it’s only fitting the fun comes via both routes in 2026.
The same waters where colonists dumped tea into the harbor and forever changed the course of history will welcome a stunning fleet of tall ships back-to-back with Independence Day celebrations. Massachusetts-ported Mayflower II is just one of dozens of international vessels to parade into the waterfront, welcome guests aboard and conclude with a massive fireworks display.

Boston is certainly no stranger to things that go boom in the night — or that “pop.” For a fifth decade, the city will host the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, a free outdoor orchestral extravaganza where the sky fills with fire and sizzle after the “1812 Overture,” complete with a booming canon chorus.
“Boston is renowned as the ‘Birthplace of the Revolution’ — and for the Pops — so there’s really not a better way to spend July Fourth,” said Dave O’Donnell, vice president of Strategic Communications, Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau. “But in reality, there’s so much to do in the city and beyond all year long.”
Festivities in neighboring communities such as Concord that started last year have teed up enthusiasm for what’s to come in 2026 said Beth Williams, tourism manager, Town of Concord. In 1775, the “Shot Heard ’Round the World” was fired here, beginning the American War for Independence. A 2025 costumed reenactment of the salvo drew 40,000 visitors who signed up in droves for a new Patriots of Color experience. This year it’s Concord’s most booked historical tour.
Farther afield, train-accessible Gillette Stadium in Foxborough will play host to several FIFA World Cup matches June through July. The home of the appropriately named New England Patriots football and New England Revolution soccer teams is one of just 11 U.S. hubs chosen for coveted hosting opportunities. That’s a testament to what Massachusetts has to offer, said O’Donnell. “Soccer fans are so passionate about their teams, and fandom is in many respects related to identity,” he said. “It’s so exciting because there are very few places in the U.S. that match how strongly the concept of American identity and freedom are linked than this state.”
PENNSYLVANIA
When people ask historian and author David Kurlander for advice on where to visit in the United States, Philadelphia “100 percent is at the top of the list.” “Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, historic houses like Betsy Ross’ all tell the early history of this country. This is the place where the Declaration of Independence and Constitution were debated and where the Declaration was ultimately signed,” he said.
In 2026 the National Constitution Center opens two new galleries timed with America’s 250th: permanent exhibits around the separation of powers, and America’s Founding Gallery, which will feature one of just 14 original copies of the U.S. Constitution.
Besides the traditional must-visits, this year Philadelphia launches a new City of Neighborhoods tour series to spotlight artsy Fishtown, foodie East Passyunk and colorful Gayborhood in Midtown Village. From its origins, Philadelphia — coined from the Greek phileo (love) and adelphos (brother) — has been founded on the concept of brotherly love, said Kurlander.
That’s manifested into one epic stretch of welcoming celebrations that starts with Pride Month in June, rolls into Juneteenth mid-month and kicks into ultimate high gear with the Welcome America Festival. Rather than a day or a long weekend, 16 days of street parties, concerts and free museum celebrations all culminate in a gigantic July Fourth parade and fireworks above one of the city’s most iconic sites: the Philadelphia Art Museum, made famous by Rocky’s run up its steps.
