While there’s no concrete timeline for when the Federal Aviation Administration will allow Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to return to service, American Airlines officials believe the aircraft could be airborne by mid-August, carrying passengers by the beginning of September.

In a series of statements last week, American Airlines announced its intention to cancel 737-MAX-related flights through Labor Day. The cancellations do not reflect a lack of progress, but gives customers and employees better opportunity to plan for the upcoming travel season. Through Sept. 3, roughly 115 flights per day will be canceled.

In the same release, American Airlines officials noted they are pleased with the rate of progress evident in the forthcoming Boeing software fix based on conversations with regulatory authorities. American’s outward confidence in Boeing continued at the airline’s annual shareholders meeting, as reported by Yahoo Finance.

Doug Parker, CEO, American Airlines Group, Inc., said he fully expects the grounded aircraft to fly again by mid-August. Parker explained that, to his understanding, a concrete fix for the aircraft’s software is on the way. Once the fix is in, pilots will need time to train on the new software before the planes return to commercial flights.

In an effort to raise confidence in the aircraft, Parker announced during the call American Airlines executives will be the first passengers once the grounding order is lifted. Over time, the public will come to realize the aircraft is safe, Parker said in the call.
