Alaska Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines Raise Checked Bag Fees; Southwest Ditches Movie Fee
Add Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines to the list of airlines raising baggage fees. Alaska will raise checked bag fees to $30 for the first checked bag, $40 for the second and $100 for the third for tickets purchased on or after Dec. 5. Details here.

Hawaiian Airlines upped checked bag fees Nov. 13, raising fees for the first and second bags flying between North America and Hawai’i by $5, to $30 and $40 respectively. Checked bag fees on flight to neighboring islands are, for now, unchanged. Details here.

And, in a nice move, Southwest Airlines decided to drop the $5 fee it charged for in-flight movies and instead offer free movies and entertainment to those who download the Southwest app. Details and current movie listing can be found here.

Allergic to Nuts? American Airlines Will Accommodate You
While American Airlines does not serve nuts in flight, starting Dec. 12, the airline will allow passengers with nut allergies to board early so they can wipe down tray tables and seat areas in an effort to avoid exposure to allergens. Delta Air Lines, which continues to serve peanuts, (Southwest stopped in August) also allows passengers with nut allergies to board early as well.

Upgrades for Families
Joon, a millennial-focused Air France subsidiary launched in December 2017, rolled out Cosy Joon, seat upgrades for families traveling with small children. Much like Air New Zealand’s economy-class Skycouch option, Cosy Joon bookings offer the option of turning seats into a flat area for kids to sleep or play. Details here.

Mindfulness City in Kingdom of Bhutan Unveiled as Future Economic Hub

In front of an audience of 30,000 Kingdom of Bhutan residents and officials, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck presented his vision for a new economic hub in Bhutan. Located between India to the south and China to the north, Bhutan is one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. Bhutan came late to global tourism. It opened its borders to international visitors in 1974 and, while tourism definitely increased, residents are enduring “light” rush-hour traffic in Thimphu, its capital city, as the only Asian capital without traffic lights.
