The cure for summer’s end? Florida. At Mission Inn Resort about a half hour from Orlando, slip into the historic elegance of the resort’s Spanish Colonial-inspired architecture. The property’s El Campéon golf course was designed by golf pro and architect George O’Neil, and has hosted celebrated players including Babe Zaharias, Ben Hogan, Patty Berg, Arnold Palmer and trick-shot legend Joe Kirkwood. Built in 1917 and originally called the Floridian, it ranks as the first course in Florida to offer grass greens rather than the standard oiled-sand greens of the day. The name was changed to El Campéon (The Champion) after its sale in 1964. Fully modernized, the course has 85-foot elevation changes on six holes on a stretch of land once covered with hardwoods and citrus groves, and was rated second nationally in the most recent GolfAdvisor.com player survey. From Oct. 1, 2016–Jan. 15, 2017, enjoy the 100th Anniversary Golfer’s Getaway with play on historic El Campéon golf course: With a two-night minimum stay, golfing guests stay in deluxe accommodations and enjoy daily golf with a shared cart, unlimited use of all practice facilities, a lavish daily buffet breakfast at La Hacienda restaurant, a four-course wine dinner for two on arrival night at El Conquistador lakeside restaurant, a commemorative 100th anniversary merchandise gift set, on-site anniversary savings coupons for merchandise and spa services, club storage and cleaning and late check-out on departure day so that you can fit in a last round beneath the sun. Prices begin at $194.50 per person, based on double occupancy and excluding resort fee and taxes. Add on a third or fourth night for $155 per person.

May 28, 2025Williamsburg Inn Review
You don’t have to love brass chandeliers or brocade to appreciate what Williamsburg Inn does best: delivering a polished, unpretentious stay amid America’s most iconic living history museum. This is where you check in for traditional luxury without feeling like you’re trapped in a time capsule. The Queen stayed here (twice), and so did Eisenhower, but you’re not here to make history. You’re here to enjoy it, on your own terms.

May 27, 2025Plan a Legendary Gathering in Honolulu
Myths and origin stories form a powerful framework for the history of Hawai‘i. Marking the horizon behind Honolulu, the ancient volcanic formation of Lē‘ahi — technically a volcanic tuff cone more commonly known to the world as Diamond Head — provides a constant physical reminder of the tales that shaped the history of this location. While researching legends for my Hawai‘i-based Dark Paradise Mysteries series (Kensington Books), I learned the tale of the demigod Maui, who used his enchanted fishing hook to reach into the sea to heave the Hawaiian islands, including Diamond Head, above the surface of the water.
