When the phrase cruise vacation comes to mind, most conjure up images of tropical locales, clear-blue waters and all-inclusive piña coladas. A new cruise takes that meaning and gives it an educational twist. Crystal Cruises launches a route of vacation vessels to some of the most historic spots along the east coast of the United States. Beginning Oct. 25, passengers will spend 14 days sailing between New York and Fort Lauderdale, stopping at 12 historical sites along the way. Stops will include Washington, D.C.´s Capitol building and array of monuments along the National Mall; the plantations of Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga.; and Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Md. An editor of USA Today and former White House Correspondent will offer onboard lectures to aid in the understanding and convey the legendary stories of each site. After brushing up on some of America’s most poignant historical moments, the cruise continues to the Caribbean islands of Turks & Caicos, Aruba and the Dominican Republic before returning to its final stop in Fort Lauderdale.
